What brings us here…

On November 12, 2007, the Dunmore Historical Society received their official approved charter from the Commonwealth Of Pennsylvania   Basically what this means is that we do indeed exist beyond those first dreams.  Next on our wish list is a permanent home to store and share our collective history.  Your membership helps us work towards that.

Excerpt from 1st edition of The Gazette, newsletter of the Dunmore Historical Society.:

Etched somewhere in the minds of the founding members were thoughts of preserving Dunmore’s history.  From their different paths in life, the same thought was present.  What are we preserving of our history or rather, what are not preserving.  What treasures lie in our in our attics and basements that we’ve long forgotten?  What will be left of us when we are gone?  What lives did our ancestors live and how did we or how can we honor them?  What makes this town so special?  The roots are indeed, as vital as the branches.

We still have the past so close.  Our fathers and grandfathers worked in the coal mines as young breaker boys. We’ve seen Dunmore change with immense growth but still the streetcars and factories live on in the memories in those around us.  We have stories of wartime and lives lost.  We have stories of victory in both big and small ways.  We all have stories that can paint the picture of our past.  We need only to capture them and preserve them.  That faded photo in the album may just pave the way to those stories.

There is such pride in Dunmore.  Here by birth or by design, we have all found in Dunmore something worth keeping.  Stories were told over and over in families; treasures were tucked away for safekeeping.  We are the past and we create our future hence our motto, “preserving our past, ensuring our future”.  Dust off those treasures and spend some time remembering the past so it really can live forever.   –Colleen Scott, Editor
