Please accept our apology for the delay in getting out this communication, but we have been very busy.
Thanks to the generosity of the Elders of the Tripp St Christian Church, we now have a permanent home. The property on the corner of Tripp Avenue and Barton St was signed over to the Dunmore Historical Society in April of this year. It is our intention to preserve the church portion of the building as it is for as long as possible. We are considering renting it out to a small congregation, or for special occasions.
The parsonage has been vacant for several years and needs some T L C. The electrical wiring has to be modernized ($1000 to $1500); the heating plant seems OK but has to be checked. A separate gas meter was installed and must be piped into the basement. The church needs a water heater and maintenance on the boiler. The bath upstairs needs new fixtures ($500) and the kitchen needs to be updated, the walls and ceiling need to be insulated ($1500), the windows should be replaced ($3000), and it needs new carpeting. The 3 bedrooms and the bathroom upstairs have been repainted by Sal and Mary Ann Mecca and they are working on the dinning room, living room, and kitchen on the first floor. Our finances will not allow us to complete all the necessary improvements, but we will get it rented as soon as possible.
The basement has a large “Community” room and complete kitchen. We plan to use it for our meetings, exhibits, educational talks and to display our historical artifacts’. We are in dire need of a “Stair Glide” to make the basement handicapped accessible. If you know where we can get one donated or at a reasonable price please let us know. 558 1060 (leave message) 344 0946 Sal Mecca, or 840 3353 Vic Capooci. There is another room in the basement that we plan to use as an office, with computers etc. but it needs work on the walls and floor before we can occupy it.
All of this work is being done by 5 members of the executive board and we desperately need your help. If you are experienced in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, marketing, fund raising, grant writing or writing this newsletter and can spare even an hour or two, contact us.
Our first Fund Raiser will be a Flea Market & Bake Sale on Saturday August 21, from 8 am to 3 pm. Check your attic, basement, garage and shed for things that you no longer need but are still useful and drop them off at the church any Wednesday or Saturday from 10am to 12pm, or 2 pm to 3 pm. If you can’t get to the church to drop them off, call us, we will pick them up. This is also a good opportunity for you to visit your Historical Societies’ new home. If you have nothing to donate please consider a cash donation.
The Annual Spaghetti Dinner will be held on Thursday September 30 at the Dunmore Community center. Serving will be from 4 pm to 7 pm. Tickets are $8.00 for adults and $4.00 for children under 12. If you are available to help, please call us.
On Wednesday November 10th Father Sica will be the guest speaker at a fund raiser dinner at the Parrish Center. Attorney Michael McDonald has agreed to serve as toastmaster for what promises to be a very entertaining evening. Tickets will be $30.00 each and there are a limited number available.
Another of our projects is a walking trail around the No. 1 reservoir. That’s the one near the Holiday Inn. Karl Wegforth has received almost all the required permits to begin construction of the trail. It will be about a mile long and will be constructed with the least impact on the plant life in the area. Donations of labor and machinery will be gladly accepted. See Karl..
Several Dunmore residents and businessmen have answered our plea for assistance. Some of them are: Gertrude Hawks Candies, David Hawk, David Jackson, Dunmore Appliance, Dr Giordano, Dr Sebastionelli, Joes Kwik Mart, Walter Kunz, Advanced Imaging, F.N.C.Bank, U. G. L., Louise Jones, Northeastern Surgical Specialists, Carlucci Funeral Home, and Anna Marias Restaurant. We ask you to use their services if possible and thank them for their support.
As you know the annual dues are our primary means of support. If you haven’t paid dues in a year please send a check to our office at 126 Barton St.
If you have any old photo, tools, toys, publications or maps, consider loaning them to the Society to be displayed for the enjoyment of the Community.
